As a Community Engagement Manager, Nakia creates and delivers strategic initiatives and relationship building tactics to build a faithful cohort of champions and supporters for charter schools in the Hartford and Manchester area and the broader movement. For over eight years, Nakia had the privilege of working in several capacities for Achievement First, a high performing charter school whose mission is to close the achievement gap and change the lives of our urban scholars and their families. She initially worked on the operations team for AF Hartford Middle School. In this role, Nakia partnered with parents in launching a successful PTO and assisted in community canvassing and student recruitment efforts. As a proud resident of one of the communities in which AF serves, she was honored to transition into an instructional role as a Kindergarten teacher, where she experienced the transformative effect of real educational equity more personally. After two successful years in the classroom, she was offered a new opportunity, serving as Outreach Associate on Achievement First’s recruitment team. Over the past three years, she has had the pleasure of designing and executing strategies to attract top teachers across the country.
