About Connecticut’s Charter Schools
- Over 11,000 students attend 21 public charter schools in Connecticut.
- Ninety-four percent (94%) of students attending charter schools are students of color.
- Sixty-two percent (62%) of Connecticut’s charter school students come from low-income households.
- SBAC assessments only evaluate students in grades 3-8. The below information is based on the nineteen (19) schools who received SY2021-22 SBAC data and does not include our state’s two public charter high schools.
Key SY 2021-22 SBAC Findings
Our team has put together the following highlights about the data.
- Statewide performance for all schools and districts decreased by 6.6 percentage points compared with 2018-19, the most recent year with comparable data.
- Ninety-five percent (95%) of all charter schools out-performed districts that serve the same population of students in ELA and ninety percent (90%) outperformed their host district in Math, in terms of the percent of students meeting or exceeding proficiency requirements for their grade level.
- 9.7% of all public schools reached the state assessment goal proficiency of 75% in ELA.
- 6.3% of all public schools reached the state assessment goal proficiency of 75% in math.
- Stamford Charter School for Excellence is in the 93rd percentile in ELA and 95th percentile in math across Connecticut public schools.
- The following schools out-performed the state average in ELA: Integrated Day Charter School; Odyssey Community School; Side by Side; Stamford Charter School for Excellence.
- The following schools out-performed the state average in math: Integrated Day Charter School; Odyssey Community School; Side by Side; Stamford Charter School for Excellence.
- While most schools saw a decrease in proficiency between SY18-19 and SY 21-22 some charter schools actually increased their proficiency percentages:
- Great Oaks Charter School’s proficiency in ELA went from 19.8% to 24.4%.
- The Bridge Academy’s proficiency in Math went from 12.8% to 13.9%.
- Elm City Montessori School’s proficiency in ELA went from 36.1% to 49%, and Math went from 22.2% to 27.9%.
- Integrated Day Charter School’s proficiency in ELA went from 52.8% to 60.6%, and Math went from 40.1% to 44.6%.
- Interdistrict School for Arts and Communications’ proficiency in ELA went from 30.2 to 34.4% and Math went from 10.6% to 13%.
